Punta Colonet is the potential location of a massive container port intended to rival the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach in size and capacity. Located 65 miles south of Ensenada, Mexico, Punta Colonet is a sparsely populated town of about 2,500 people. Port proponents expect the port to handle 6-8 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) and the town to increase to 200,000 people. The current economic downturn and decrease in import traffic may render this project infeasible, or at least temporarily delayed.
